Picnik Firefox Extension

November 12, 2007

Remember when I talked about Picnik? The free online photo-editing program that lets you crop, resize, and add cool effects to your photos without having to download a thing?!

Well, lifehacker has just announced that there is now a Firefox extension download of Picnik that will let you edit any website image by right-clicking your mouse. No Photoshop, iPhoto, or other application required.

Great for those who are always taking screenshots or needing to do some quick online editing of pics!

Easily Print Batches of Photos on Flickr

November 11, 2007

Flickr has just made it easier to print your beautiful collection of pics. When you are signed into your Flickr account, click on the ‘Organizr’ tab at the top of the page. You will then be able to drag and drop your images into a giant batch to edit or print them, rather than having to print them one by one. Click on the new ‘order prints’ button and from there you’ll be able to order as many photos as you’d like. According to Crave, this new method is way easier then before!

Test My Speed

November 5, 2007

Internet Service Providers throw around broadband speed stats like they’re going out of style, so if you want to test the actual speed of your Internet you better seek outside sources.

A website called Test My Speed offers a directory of websites that can check how fast your computer connects to the Internet via modem speed tests from all over the world.

All you have to do is select your location from a map and Test My Speed will offer a link to a local website that can check your speed for free. Want to share your favorite website of the day with us?

If you like popping bubble wrap but also like being eco-friendly and avoiding plastics, check out Virtual Bubblewrap, a site that’s “dedicated to this most entertaining packing material.”

Geek Tip: Get Google Alerts For Videos

September 27, 2007

Google alerts — email updates of the latest relevant Google results (web, news, etc.) based on your choice of query or topic — just got more lively. Alerts have long been a great way to stay on top of what your favorite celebrities, cousin or company has been up to and now you can keep up with all the new videos with video alerts. This week the Google blog announced you can add video to your other Google alerts. Here’s more:

Video Alerts enables you to specify any topics or queries of interest so we can deliver interesting and relevant videos on a daily, weekly, or as-it-happens basis (your choice) to you via email. To start receiving Video Alerts, you can visit the Google Alerts homepage directly or set up the alert during your normal video searches. Videos may come from Google Video, YouTube, or many other video sources on the web.

Now I can rest assured I’ll never miss out on a Crockermania video again!

Visuals Of The World

September 11, 2007

Visuals of the World is one of those websites you have to visit to fully understand and appreciate.

The creators are on a quest to make the longest visual website in the world and are asking web users to share and contribute to their strip of “seamless” images. You can upload any image, in jpeg or giff format so long as it’s a maximum size of 75 K and 300 pixels in width and 700 pixels in height.

Of course, while contributing is fun, the site is all about the ocular experience. Right now, the “visual” is a ridiculous-scroll length and features vintage and contemporary images of all types. (Well, there’s nothing pornographic, but it’s well varied.)

Each image links back to it’s original source or another website, so while enjoying the aesthetics of the site you can also link to a small army of unrelated internet treats. It’s a site to behold.

Website Of The Day: Waitless

July 19, 2007

I usually share websites of the day that aim to improve your digital lifestyle by making it simpler and more fun and efficient, but sometimes I have to give props to companies that are doing things right.

Sprint has created a diverting viral marketing site called Waitless that promises to help you “fast forward through life” with a selection of time saving tips submitted by readers. They call them “Sprintcuts,” and range from instant shirt removal (who doesn’t need that every once in a while?), speed tying your shoes and turbo parking, which offers a time rebate of nine days.

You can also waste quality office hours on the site calculating the time you spend on menial tasks, commuting or doing all those things you seem to be squandering your life away on. In my case, my 12-hour a day online addiction works out to about 39 years and one month of my life spent online. It’s a depressing realization that I’m going to have to balance out with increased walks in the park or time at the gym.

The site’s main gimick of course is the fact that Sprint’s unlimited calling starts at 7 pm instead of 9 pm, which saves you two hours of waiting time a day - or four years of waiting over a life time. Too bad they can’t provide service to my iPhone, right?

Thanks for the tip Chuger. I see you too are wasting your time online. To learn how to share your favorite sites with the Website of the Day group,

Geek Tip: Spell Your Name In Flickr Letters

July 18, 2007

A guy named Erik Kastner has created a fun application with PHP and javascript that allows you to enter the letters of your name (it can be your name or any word you happen to like) and get a fun graphic made of flickr letters. Once you have submitted your name you are actually given an embed code, which you can put on your website or profile. If you do not have a website of Teamsugar profile, I suggest taking a screen shot of the image and saving it in your files. Try it out here.

Special thanks to WhipLashChild for sharing this great tip! You can check out other examples from her blog.
